Ozone is one of the most effective oxidants available. It quickly (40sec) kills bacteria including carious pathogens, as well as viruses and fungi . It also disinfects wounds and stops bleeding. It has been used for many years to purify water and air. KaVo has hence developed a product called HealOzone utilising this property of ozone.

How does it work ? KaVo HealOzone generates its active principle from the oxygen in the atmospheric air. The vacuum created under the silicone tooth cup sucks ozone to the site to be treated. After the required treatment time, all the ozone is aspirated off and brokenback down into oxygen again.Immediately after this treatment, the dentist initiates remineralisation of the now disinfected area. When given a special kit,the patient can continue this remineralisation treatment themself at home for a while afterwards. Parts of the unit and its function Air dryer with automatic humidity sensor ensures that air humidity is stable and that the ozone concentration within the silicone cup remains steady Differential pressure sensorregisters leaks and activates the ozone generator Safe “Closed-system”ozone generator generates ozone from atmospheric oxygen Ozone concentration of 2100 ppm at a flow rate of ~ 100 x/s in the vacuum-tight silicone cup Moisture trap prevents moisture from contaminating the ozone neutraliser Ozone neutraliser reduces O3 to O2 and releases neutral air into the practice environment Vacuum pump lowers pressure to prevent ozone from leaking out of the system.
Advantages of heal ozone Offers a non-mechanical, non-toxic treatment for caries removal i.e, without needles, without probing, without drilling. Fissure and proximal caries can be irradicated gently but thoroughly nevertheless. It also remineralises initial caries, hence causes reversal of caries process within 4-12 weeks. Reduces sensitivity in tooth. This feature makes HealOzone useful on healthy, but sensitive, root surfaces to reduce or eliminate sensitivity. Similarly it can be used after the shaping of a tooth for a crown, to reduce or eliminate subsequent sensitivity, before placing the temporary or final crown. It can reduce or eliminate symptoms and speed the healing of soft tissue ulcerations. Helps in root canal disinfection. It penetrates into the entire canal system down to the very last corner ensuring complete disinfection.

Concerns Ozone can irritate the lungs. Therefore, HealOzone is designed to NOT deliver any ozone unless a seal is obtained around the tooth or soft tissue lesion. Once a seal is confirmed, ozone flows to the site and is sucked back into the machine where it is converted back to oxygen for release. No ozone is released into the mouth or "working" environment. Achieving the perfect seal is sometimes challenging. Disposable silicone rubber cups of varying sizes are available. The dentist selects the appropriate size. In addition, barriers must be improvised by the dentist to achieve a seal if the silicone cup alone isn’t adequate. If a seal can not be achieved, traditional dentistry will then be used, instead of HealOzone.
