American Academy of Sleep Medicine declared in 2006 that oral appliances fitted by dentists could be used instead of breathing machines to control mild to moderate forms of this debilitating condition.

Athanasios Zavras, an associate professor in the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, started getting frantic calls from patients in 2005 after case reports linked oral osteoporosis medications to bone death in the jaw. Fearing that procedures like tooth extraction would exacerbate the problem, doctors and dentists advised patients taking these drugs to postpone dental work.
